Night Shift Brewing, Boston, MA

Background

Three friends Michael Oxton, Mike O’Mara, and Rob Burns began home brewing in a Somerville, MA kitchen in 2007. They called themselves “Night Shift Brewing” – desk workers by day, home brewers by night. In 2010, the trio began planning their own nanobrewery. By 2011, they began building a 3,000 sq. ft. 3.5BBL brewery in Everett, MA. They opened the doors in Everett in March 2012. It only took two years to outgrow their first brewery and in May 2014 moved into their current 30,000 sq. ft. location in Everett. By 2016, Night Shift Distributing began operations at a cold-storage warehouse in Chelsea where they began distributing their beer as well as other craft beer breweries.

Night Shift Brewing also created two “Owl’s Nest” beer gardens along the Charles River where inhabitants can enjoy the wide open spaces and Night Shift beer.

A second Night Shift brewery and taproom has opened at Lovejoy Wharf.

Experience

On a recent visit to Boston we had to check out the newest addition to one of our favorite breweries there. Night Shift at Lovejoy Wharf exceeded expectations. We nostalgically reminisced about our first visit to the facility in Everett not long after they opened. Boy, what a different vibe at Lovejoy! Light and bright. Colorful. And on the water. It is a very open space with a large concrete bar surrounded by comfy stools that reminded me of those lab chairs from college. A spacious restaurant with both table and booth seating is also available to enjoy a full menu of food. The beer list is extensive with offerings only available at this location and other favorites seen at both. We shared a couple of delicious appetizers too. There are also a few tables outside with a glimpse of the harbor.

The friendly beertender pointed out the colorful mural which depicts Night Shift’s successful history. From the boys brewing in their Somerville apartment to Everett to the awesome pop up beer gardens and now Lovejoy Wharf. I recently read there is even more to come! Congrats to this great brewery which produces some tasty beers and creative dishes at the newest location. When visiting the wharf, take a walk along the locks to see where the Charles River meets Boston Harbor.
