White Labs Brewing, San Diego, CA

Background – White Labs Brewing

Most home brewers are familiar with White Labs for supplying an endless list of yeasts. Maybe not as familiar with White Labs Brewing. Well in 2015, White Labs invested in a four-vessel brewhouse that provides wort to propagate their yeast cultures as well as brew beers that serve three important purposes:

  1. Supply beer for their San Diego Tasting Room and Asheville restaurant, White Labs Kitchen & Tap.
  2. Use the beer brewed for R&D purposes, gathering data and information on strain performance which is then shared with their customers worldwide
  3. Showcase the impact yeast has on beer by doing side by side comparisons featuring a variety of yeast strains

Unlike most commercial breweries, White Labs Brewing Co. has smaller fermenters. By using six hectoliter (5 bbl) fermenters, they divide the same wort base into smaller batches and ferment it using different yeast strains. With the unique brewing system, White Labs Brewing Co. gives patrons the unique opportunity to visit their tasting rooms and experience how much yeast impacts the complexity and overall profile of beer.

White Labs now have four tasting rooms within the U.S. The White Labs Tasting Room in San Diego contains a 20 barrel brewhouse that produces beer for the tasting room.

Experience

When we arrived at White Labs not sure of what we would encounter. Turns one can taste the same wort fermented with four different yeast strains. The differences between the beers is incredible. The day we were there, White Lab’s CEO Chris White was with a film crew giving an interview. We highly recommend checking White Labs Tasting Room out. Delicious and educational.

The tasting room does not serve food. There was no nearby lodging noted.

When in the area, check out The Pure Project and Mikkeller.
