Background
3 Floyds Brewing Company has certainly become one of the rock stars in the American craft beer scene. In 1996, Nick Floyd opened the brewery with his father, Michael, as a primary investor and his brother, Simon, helping out — hence, Three Floyds. Because land was cheaper in Northwest Indiana than Chicago, he rented a spot there in an old auto garage and went to work as Three Floyds Brewing. As the years went by, the brewery, with their heavy metal and fantasy fueled artwork, continued winning medals and increasing output. The cult like following for 3 Floyds also increases year after year. With limited distribution in the area, people line up each weekend to snap up as much available selection as possible. Nick says he intends on growing a bit more, opening another brewpub and starting a distillery. He claims they will not get so large they can’t maintain their emphasis on quality.
Experience
When we arrived one weekday afternoon. It was busy, but we were able to get a parking spot and a table inside. The place was hopping and the music of course was heavy metal. With all the talk about their beer, we didn’t expect high quality cuisine. Their food menu is extensive, diverse and delicious. Tempura cheese curds were filling and tasty, but the black truffle gnocci was to die for. We were also lucky in that we arrived a few weeks after their annual Dark Lord Day and was able try left over Dark Lord Imperial Stout, thick sweet coffee flavor far too smooth to be 15% ABV. Also enjoyed Zombie vs. Unicorn and Yum Yum. They also have a nice selection of to go bottles and we had to leave with a few we weren’t able to try on draft.
No nearby lodging noted. Strongly suggest taking Uber to 3 Floyds or have a designated driver.
