Background – Resident Brewing Co.
Robert Masterson a successful IT Consultant received a brew kit one Christmas and began brewing at home. Brewing soon turned to a passion as he worked to create unique beers. Soon he decided he could start a small brewing operation in his spare time. He thought he would start small in a warehouse somewhere and build it slowly. Robert’s brother in-law who saw the potential, began pitching the idea around town and soon accumulated 24 investors and plans to open a restaurant brewery. As it turns out The Local, a restaurant at 4th and Manning had just remodeled and obtained a connecting space that held a ten-barrel Premier Stainless brew system. Masterson who had just won the Stone homebrew competition caused The Local group to take notice and agree to a partnership. The newly created Resident Brewing Co. opened in mid 2015. Robert continues to brew at night and on weekends and has enlisted his father as one of his brew assistants.
Experience
A group of us showed up on a Friday night to a pretty crowded room. The room has a long bar with a fairly large area with tables. Available to us were 8 Resident beers & a nice variety of about 30 guest offerings. I really enjoyed the two Gose offerings, Die Gose and Die Gose Passion Fruit, both tart with a bit of salt. The IPA’s are also worth trying. Our server was very pleasant, even offering to replace a beer a member of our party did not care for. There is also a nice assortment of pub food available ala The Local.
The Resident is located in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. It was a bit of a walk, but we did it, from the convention center area. There are so many bars and restaurants in the area, but is worth a few extra blocks to find some decent craft beer in a friendly setting. Several hotels nearby and lots of other activities.
