Background
David Arnce, a former partner in Cartel Coffee, launched the beer operation in 2012 as an offshoot of Cartel Coffee Lab. The brewery was attached to the coffee shop, and soon outgrew the space. Arnce and Cartel eventually parted ways deciding it was the best for both operations to separate. Chief Beer Officer David Arnce, Head Brewer Matt Johnson, Dylan DeMiguel (sales), and Chief of Staff Jason Calhoon opened The Shop Beer Company in August 2016. The group took over a 10,000-square-foot space at First Street and Hardy Drive that was a house built in 1952 and was the home of Harry Mitchell, former Mayor of Tempe and U.S Representative, and his son Mark Mitchell the current Mayor of Tempe. The house in recent years was a granite company and required alot of renovation. The tasting room has several tables and a bar. Out the back door they have a large patio with some cool artwork. Fire and Foraged is the permanent food truck right next to the patio. Delicious burgers and sandwiches to go with refreshing craft beer. The building north of the patio houses the brew house.
Experience
The Shop Beer Company did an early collaboration with Stone in San Diego, then Modern Times and several local breweries and groups. We have been to the Beer Shop a few times and each time had a great time. They usually have some interesting beers to try. The last time I really enjoyed Church Music, a great NE IPA. The food truck always have something delicious to try as well. We recommend you give these guys a try.
