Oro Brewing Company, Mesa, AZ

Background

Oro Brewing Company, the second brewery to open in downtown Mesa opened October 2016. Oro is located just a block from Desert Eagle Brewing, which in 2012 became Mesa’s first brewery. The owners of Oro, Chuck Wennerlund and David Valencia started as homebrewers before following their dreams and opening Oro. The pair hired Jesse Kortepeter to be their head brewer. Oro has a three-barrel brewing system, making it a nanobrewery. The three-barrel system Oro uses only makes 93 gallons at a time leading to the quick turn around of different brews.

Oro Brewing Company took over an 1890s 3,000-square-foot brick building. The owners adapted much of the building’s contents in their remodel to retain a sense of its past. For example the tables are made from floorboards of the former dance studio and wood from the attic was used to frame the glass door and window separating the brewhouse from the taproom. The brewery also profits from being one of several breweries on the light rail from Mesa through Phoenix.

Oro doesn’t have a kitchen of its own, but it has worked out a deal with the artisan sandwich shop Worth Takeaway next door. Customers can order sandwiches at the bar, and the food is brought to them.

Experience

Great spot in downtown Mesa to grab a beer. Friendly and informative beertenders. We especially enjoyed  It Came from Beyond which has a great nose on this Triple IPA.  The american wheat ale, Trivago Suave, was a perfect easy drinking beer.  Proceeds from the sale of this beer had been targeted to support a local community agency. Fellow beer drinkers noshed on great looking sandwiches from Worth. The Buffalo Chicken dip is also quite tasty.

There is a Ramada by Wyndham a block or two away. When visiting Oro Brewing be sure to check out Desert Eagle right down the street.
