Background
Three friends from Bishop California opened Mountain Rambler Brewery in 2014 with the help of crowdfunding. Owner Joe Lane is a second-generation “Eastsider”, east of the Sierra Nevadas; his grandparents arrived in Mammoth in 1948. Lane worked as a Fisheries Biologist for the California Department of Fish and Game prior to dreaming up the brewery.
Experience
There are not a lot of breweries east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range as you are heading up 395 towards Yosemite. Needless to say, we were ready for a cold one by the time we hit Bishop and were glad to discover Mountain Rambler Brewery. We arrived at midday on a Wednesday and actually found several other folks enjoying the brewery. The tasting room is located in a strip mall with several tables inside and on the patio and a bar inside. We tried four of their beers our favorite being Bardini, a dry hopped Berlinner. Also enjoyed Topsy Turvey (pilsner), Picture Puzzle (Session IPA) & Seven Gables (Scottish Ale). You can also enjoy a pretty diverse food menu at Mountain Rambler including burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and daily specials. We had the hummus plate which was delicious and plentiful.
When in the area you can also check out Mammoth Brewing Company a bit further up the road or June Lake Brewing a bit further. While in Bishop, you must check out Erik Schat’s Bakery.
