Background – Humble Sea Brewing
A trio of friends opened Humble Sea Brewing in March 2017. Nick Pavlina learned to homebrew from his dad back in 2008 and has been brewing ever since. In 2009 he moved to Pleasure Point and several years later found new roomies Taylor West & Frank Scott Krueger where the idea of a brewery began. Nick is the head brewer, Taylor is acting manager of the tasting room, and Frank is in charge of everything about designing and branding Humble Sea.
While waiting for the processes involved in opening a brewery to take shape, Nick continued brewing and introduced their beer to soon to be patrons at area bars and beer events. The doors swung open in March 2017.
Experience
We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon to join several groups at the tasting room. Humble Sea Brewing has several tables inside and a bar as well as a wraparound patio out front. The 12 on tap options looked excellent and we ordered flights to try most of them. We loved the fact they replaced the name hazy with foggy on their hazy IPAs. Most enjoyed: juicy, foggy Frothy Grommet & Pool Snorkeler, Wet Suite Dreams, a Pale, Socks and Sandals IPA & Berried Treasure, a Pale Wheat. We also ordered some of the best avocado toast and smoked trout toast that was fantastic. The presentation of “bar food” probably reflected the area, it was above and beyond, complete with edible flowers.
The menu included smoked meat sandwiches, pressed reubens, salads, experimental toasts and other bar snacks. We regretted later we did not eat more! The beers were so good we had to leave with a crowler with a Foggy IPA. Unfortunately we ended up leaving it in a hotel fridge in Oxnard. Perhaps someone enjoyed it!
If possible, we suggest you walk around the corner and check out Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing and hey, why not Silver Mountain Winery & Santa Cruz Mountain winery. Oh and an amazing bakery! A fun area in Santa Cruz.
