Wren House Brewing, Paradise Valley, AZ

Background Wren House

In May of 2014, work began on converting a 1920’s house and garage into Westward Brewing Co. Drew Pool and Bill Hammond who met while both worked at Intel are the co-owners. By the time they received license approval and they were scheduled to open, around July 2015, they ran into trademark issues for Westward. In the end, they opened under the new name Wren House Brewing. I am happy we snagged an original Westward growler.

Bill and Drew needed one last piece, a brewer dedicated to creating world-class brews. Enter Preston Thoeny, the final founder of Wren House. Drew’s wife, Colby, had gone to middle and high school with Preston. Colby mentioned that Preston may know a brewer in the Phoenix area who would be willing to team up with them. At the time Preston was brewing professionally in Montana for Big Sky Brewing Company. He jumped at the chance to join the future Wren House Brewing.

Expansion

When their two-vessel, 10-barrel brewhouse, maxed out the 2,000-barrel capacity at its central Phoenix location they went looking for more capacity. Eventually in 2021, they took over the former Prescott Brewing production facility in Prescott, about two hours north of Phoenix. The 8,000 barrel facility focuses on producing Wren House’s core beers, while the crew can produce more experimental beers at the Phoenix facility. The Prairie Patio is a simple outdoor patio with biergarten style tables and a walk up trailer that serves a healthy taplist of Wren beers. They are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday only!

In September 2023 Wren House Südhalle or Wren “South Hall” opened in Ahwatukee, south of Phoenix. The owners say they chose Ahwatukee because when they had to close the original Phoenix taproom in 2020 due to COVID-19, the largest number of home delivery orders came from the community.

Südhalle (South Hall) was a unique concept from Wren House that celebrates the rich traditions of European beer, culture, and cuisine.. We think this is where Old World craftsmanship meets Arizona hospitality. Besides all their usual taps they utilize Lukr side pours for their Czech-style lagers that I have not seen elsewhere in the valley. They also offer selections from world-class European breweries, many making their Arizona debut.

Opening exactly 10 years after their original Phoenix location, Wren House Brewing’s Paradise Valley (PV) location, part of the massive PV Mall redevelopment, officially opened on June 19, 2025.

Experience

As with the other three Wren house locations in the valley, Paradise Valley offers yet another different experience. We found the tasting room to be very comfortable with a combination of high top tables and booths. They have one long white bar that opens up into the patio area. The place is set up to give an English pub feel.

The PV location specialty is their cask beer selection. Cask beers are typically unfiltered and, when transferred to a cask, the yeast continues to ferment and condition the beer. These naturally carbonated ales are hand-pumped through a beer engine, as opposed to a traditional kegged beer that is pulled through a tap line with the aid of carbonation. We enjoy getting a standard pour of something as well as the cask version for a taste test. The cask version does have a nice mouthfeel.

Typically, PV also has a lot of canned beer to go, a definite plus! They do not offer food but food can be brought in or delivered. They do off a gourmet nut mixture as a snack that we think is delicious!

The tasting room is accessible. When in the Phoenix area also check out the Bone Haus, Goldwater Brewing and AZ Wilderness.
