Phantom Carriage Brewery, Carson, CA

Background

Martin Svab, founder of Phantom Carriage Brewery in Carson, California, was born on Halloween, setting him on the path to a lifelong connection with horror and the macabre. When he decided to start brewing beer professionally, he knew he wanted his brewery’s taproom and branding to celebrate his favorite genre, and provide a spot his fellow like minded horror fiends could feel at home.

Phantom Carriage is named after the eponymous 1921 silent Swedish horror film. In The Phantom Carriage, the last person to die on New Years Eve must drive a carriage collecting the souls of all those who die during the following year.

Svab worked in film production for years before opening Phantom Carriage, and is passionate about movies both as a producer and a fan. Phantom Carriage has a small movie theater in their taproom showing horror movies from open to close every day.

Experience

Phantom Carriage Brewery is tucked unassumingly in a warehouse in Carson, California. It was a challenge to find, but totally worth the effort.  The visit was an experience in itself. I don’t want to be too descriptive because I don’t want to ruin it for you. The brew, the food and the setting was one of the most unique experiences we have had in our travels.  Belgian influenced beers and sours filled the tap list.  Interesting bottle choices filled a case if you want more than the tap list offers.  The food menu had a great assortment of sandwiches, charcuterie board and a yummy s’more dessert.  Don’t miss a visit to this fun and unusual brew pub!
No nearby lodging noted.
When in the area check out Bottle Logic Brewing and Noble Aleworks.
