Background
The founders of Black Shirt Brewing Co. have apparently stepped back from day-to-day management of the distinctive taproom and hired a new head brewer. David Sakolsky, to tilt the operation in a different direction. The news comes as a surprise, because brothers and co-founders Chad and Branden Miller have been dedicated fixtures at Black Shirt since it opened in 2012.
Sakolsky, who co-founded New Hampshire’s award-winning Deciduous Brewing in 2014, specializes in brewing farmhouse styles and mixed-fermentation beers. Particularly goses and saisons — and he plans to make those styles at Black Shirt. As a result, the brewery will shift away from its signature hoppy red ales.
Experience
Black Shirt Brewing Co. turned out to be one of my favorites in Denver. A very interesting and comfortable bar, it deserves several more pictures. Great variety of different styles of beer: Loved the Dry-Hopped Mango Sour, hoppy, fruity and Sour. Electric Currancy a lighter sour with an interesting currant flavor – Blood Orange Double IPA. Huge Orange Hop nose and very smooth for a double, well played. They currently have snacks available though I understand there is now pizza available in house.
Black shirt is said to be as the best music brewery in Denver. We were not there for a show unfortunately but they did create a very cool stage on the patio using repurposed pallets. Check this place out.
No nearby lodging noted. They are a block from a light rail stop and a short Uber from many hotels.
When in Denver check out Black Project, Epic Brewing and Crooked Stave and TRVE Brewing.
