Background
Abnormal Wine Company owner Matt Deloach, honed his winemaking skills at home for years while working in the software industry. The idea of making it a commercial venture came together in 2012 with the opening of a modest 500-square-foot tasting room. Deloach says he always had the idea to add a beer component. As a result in 2014, teaming with Elvin Lai, and James Malone, Abnormal Beer Company was born. They expanded their San Bernardo location to house the brewery, restaurant and wine areas. They call the facility “The Cork and Craft”. In November 2015, San Diego’s first, and as yet only, craft brewery, urban winery and restaurant ‘trifecta’ announced an exciting $1 Million expansion at Abnormal Beer Company in Rancho Bernardo.
Experience
We arrived at Abnormal Beer Company on a Sunday afternoon. It is a very nice facility with a separate dining area and a beer tasting room and bar. Abnormal is handicapped accessible. After having a couple Abnormal beers in cans I was not expecting a lot. We were pleasantly surprised with the huge variety of delicious beers available on site and delicious food to boot!
Upon arrival we ordered a flight of seven beers to start. My favorite IPA was Vivid Dreams and the favorite Sour was Vice Versa. All were quite drinkable. After spotting them on the menu, we ordered the Salt and Pepper chicken wings. The wings were plentiful and delicious.
When in the area you must try Abnormal Beer Company! In addition, when in the area try Wild Barrel Brewing, Little Miss Brewing, Jacked Up Brewing and Mason Ale Works. There is a Radisson Hotel San Bernardo fairly close to Abnormal.
