Background – Base Camp Brewing Company
Base Camp Brewing Company owner & brewer Justin Fay an Oregon native received his Fermentation Science degree from Oregon State University . He started brewing professionally at Klamath Basin Brewing and in 2009 he moved to Portland with his wife. In 2011 after obtaining a bank loan found the current building and began remodeling.
Base Camp opened its doors November 2, 2012 in the Buckman neighborhood of Portland. It is a rather large establishment and carries off the base camp theme quite well. Slabs of wood tables mounted on large rock bases surrounded by chairs strapped with colorful climbing cords dotted the open and airy room. The wall was covered with brightly lit photos of Oregon’s breathtaking natural beauty. There was a patio off the main tasting room also.
Experience
We were there shortly after the Collabo Fest so there were many of those beers still available. A passport was offered that described several collaborations from other Oregon breweries they had on tap. Obviously this was a special event so not always available. There were two food trucks on site. We opted for a snack of Mexican food that was delicious. We did sample some of Base Camp brews too. Maybe not our favorite but decent. We did enjoy the ambiance of the place.
Many of Portland’s breweries are located across the river from the downtown. The uber ride is affordable though. We paid around $7 most of the time. We didn’t go on weekend nights though so that might up the fare.
