Bluejacket, Washington, DC

Bluejacket opened in October of 2013 pairing top notch chefs in the area with experienced brewers. The idea was to open a brewpub that has more than just average brewpub foods. Their food offerings are numerous, unique and everything we tried was delicious. Bluejacket has seen a high turn over in head brewers since opening however. The third head brewer that started in April 2015 is Josh Chapman. Josh has a background in the culinary world and in the last three years moved into the brewing world. His background in the culinary arts gives him a great background with local farmers from which he can obtain herbs, spices and fruits to create some unique beers.

The brewery is located in a historic building built in 1919 which was part of the navy yards ship and munitions manufacturing complex. This building remains remains one of the few true industrial buildings remaining in DC. It is a beautiful, huge building with the brewing equipment surrounding and above the patrons. It is quite impressive. We enjoyed “A Little Golden Gem”, a kumquat Gose. “Lost Weekend” has a huge juicy IPA hop nose & flavor. “Rheinhard De Vos” is a sour with a big sour fruit nose and quite sour flavor. Finally “Full Bloom” is a nice Saison with a farmhouse nose and Brett funky flavor.

News Break: They just posted today for a new head brewer, best of luck on their search – I am confident they will find a new brewer that can continue to produce delicious and unique beers.
