Background
Keith Chapman opened Bone Haus Brewing in 2018 with two partners. Andy Weiner, the brewmaster, has been homebrewing for 25 years. David Lozeau, a designer, has been involved in the alcohol and spirits industry for more than a decade.
Chapman received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering with the idea of working in the aviation industry. Eventually, he had an 18 year career at Fender where he eventually led global Research & Development for all guitars, amplifiers, and other musical instruments. At the end of his Fender career, he started talking with his now partner, Andy Weiner, about starting a brewery. Weiner had been homebrewing for over 25 years and was ready to think about going pro. The friends decided to start a brewery in Fountain Hills, east of Scottsdale, where they both live.
The brewery name and theme are a nod to the ossuaries and catacombs, also known as bone houses, Chapman visited across Europe.
Experience
When you come into the taproom, it feels like the 1880s – a lot of reclaimed wood and a 22-foot copper bar. Ever wanted to share a pint with a skeleton? The taproom is unique for Phoenix, skeletons and bones everywhere, historical artifacts, and a casket. The theme of Bone Haus is centered around the local legend of the Lost Dutchman in the Superstition Mountains nearby.
We originally visited Bone Haus Brewing in mid July 2018. It was a very unique experience and the beers were drinkable. They did have a few interesting varieties of beer, my favorite was probably the Earthy Pine, a smokey IPA. They have continually improved their craft. During the pandemic this year they began canning several IPAs that are quite good and available in stores.
Bone Haus is handicapped accessible. They also host a variety of food trucks most days of the week. You can find a Courtyard by Marriott about a mile west on Shea and The Inn at Eagle Mountain is very close.
