Cambridge Brewing Company, Cambridge, MA

Background

Cambridge Brewing Company opened its doors in 1989 at a time when Sam Adams reigned supreme and Harpoon had just moved into the Seaport area. Owner Phil “Brewdaddy” Bannatyne spent his “formative years” in San Francisco. There he acquired an interest in brewing and took classes in Brewing Science at the University of California, Davis. Phil then set off specifically to Cambridge to open a brew-pub. Will Meyers came to Cambridge in 1993 and soon became brewmaster. Will has always been experimental including the development of CBC’s Barrel Cellar and wild fermentation, barrel aging, and sour beer production. The CBC team still brews on a 10-barrel system like they always have keeping each beer small batch. In recent years, CBC moved some brewing operations to Mystic Brewery and canning operations to Wachusett Brewing Company.

Experience

We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon and secured a high top table inside. Cambridge Brewing Company has several tables inside and a bar. They also have a good sized patio with tables. We enjoyed Dance Magic Dance, a Brut IPA, Surprise Truck, an IPA & Fun Guy At the Party, a Belgian Dubbel. All were drinkable but probably not our favorites in the Boston area. CBC does offer a full menu of food although we ate BBQ next door at The Smoke Shop.

There is a Residence Inn by Marriott east of CBC. Be sure to check out Lamplighter about a half mile to the west.
