Background – Cascade Brewing Barrel House
Cascade Brewing was founded in 1998 by owner Art Larrance and brewmaster Ron Gansberg. Together, Art and Ron put their 40 years combined beer experience to work, designing and installing Cascade’s 10-barrel brewing system in Southwest Portland. The Lodge at Cascade Brewing is the site of the brewery, and the original location.
In 2010 the brewery expanded to inner Southeast Portland with the opening of the Cascade Brewing Barrel House. This facility is also known as the House of Sour.
The Blending House is a 23,000 sq. ft. distribution center. This is where all of the barrel aging, blending, packaging and shipping takes place. The bulk of the facility is a climate-controlled hall that houses nine oak foudres ranging from 50 to 65 hectoliters, as well as 1,300 oak barrels and puncheons.
Experience
We recently visited the Cascade Brewing Barrel House “House of Sour” in Portland. We were quite versed in Cascade because they have recently hit our area of the country with their bombers. Still, we were excited to visit and happened to hit them during Sour Fruit Fest. Now with an advertised 1400 barrels and 9 foudres under their control, is there a day at Cascade that is not a Sour Fest?
They have a nice tasting room and a patio out front. We enjoyed a few flights and particularly enjoyed the Sour Cranberry Peach Peche Crancesca, Mango Dango the Chardonnay Mango Sour, Bump N’ Rind Sour Watermelon Rind Ale, & Kentucky Peach, Bourbon Peach Pie Sour. They do offer food on sight, some shareables, sandwiches and salads.
No nearby lodging noted.
When in Portland, also check out The Labrewatory, Base Camp Brewing and Culmination Brewing.
