Background – Community Beer Co
Community Beer Co is the brainchild of Kevin Carr and brewmaster Jamie Fulton. Located in the Design District, Community brewed their first batch in December 2012, and sold their first keg in January 2013. Over the course of a little more than a year, they’ve released ten different beers, installed a bottling line, and racked up a half dozen national awards.
Carr claims their brewers are very technical, they use high-quality ingredients in their brews, and are unique in that they have their own yeast lab where they propagate a wide range of yeasts for their brews. Most breweries use one or two yeasts strains for all their beer, regardless of style. Communities use 5 yeast varieties for the 4 core beers, and upwards of 12 different yeast strains across their entire portfolio. They take the extra effort and expense of such a yeast program because it allows them to not only brew their beers true to style, but also to ensure the highest quality possible with each and every one of their brews.
Experience
We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon to join a few people enjoying a beer. The facility is quite large with a warehouse feel. There is an order bar with just a few stools. Most of the seating is picnic tables. The brewing equipment is in view behind glass at the back of the bar. There is a to go section in the tasting room with many varieties of their canned beer.
We ordered up a flight of four to start. Enjoyed the Mosaic, Citra Slice, Witbier and their Gose. We left with six packs of Citra and the Witbier.
The tamale guy was there serving up some excellent food. We enjoyed a couple varieties. Overall a fun time and indeed a feeling of Community!
No nearby lodging noted. When in Dallas also check out Peticolas Brewing and Deep Ellum !
