Background – Deschutes Portland Public House
Gary Fish established the Deschutes Brewery & Public House as small brew pub in 1988 in downtown Bend and named it after the Deschutes River. Unable to keep up with demand in its original facility, the brewery expanded to a 16,000-square-foot production brewery in 1993 with the ability to brew in 50-barrel batches. Deschutes Portland Public House opened in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon in May 2008.
In March 2016, Deschutes announced that they would build an east coast production facility in Roanoke, Virginia.
Experience
Portland Public House is located in the Pearl District near downtown Portland. We had visited the pub in Bend and were not all that impressed. We skipped the brewery. Something different about the Public House though. Maybe it was the night or the beers they had on tap or the fantastic server. The place was packed when we got there, but some nice gentlemen offered up their table in the bar. Beautiful large wood carvings of Oregon scenes were the central feature in the open dining room where people were waiting to be seated. The food is a big draw to the place too, the menu was beyond typical bar food. We enjoyed the Dungeness crab roll. yum yum. We opted to stay in the bar. Our server made sure we sampled the varied beers they had on tap.
We were disappointed to discover they were not serving the Smoked Gose because there were no chilled bottles available, but our server managed to find a little left for us to try and made sure we had a bottle to take home. The Black Butte porter was a standout, especially when chasing the Black Butte whiskey the brewery distills with Bend Distillery. We also enjoyed Pacific Wonderland lager and special reserve The Abyss Scotch stout. It was a fun evening in a great location. Just down the street is Rogue and Ten Barrel!
The Kimpton Hotel Monico is within a half mile from Deschutes Brewery and a few others.
