Fieldwork Brewing Company, Monterey, CA

Background

Fieldwork Brewing Company is a craft brewery founded in Berkeley, CA in 2015. Brewmaster Alex Tweet & businessman Barry Braden partnered up to open Fieldwork. Tweet, who had worked at both Modern Times and Ballast Point, is the man who first put grapefruit in Ballast Point’s immensely popular Sculpin IPA. In just three years, Fieldwork has opened four additional taprooms including a 10,000-square-foot beer garden in San Mateo and expanded its production from 2,700 barrels in 2015 to an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 this year. The next location will be in San Ramon. All Fieldwork beer is created from a central location in Berkeley.

Experience

We visited the Fieldwork Brewing Company in Monterey. This is an open air beer garden setting with many picnic tables, a few couches and a walk up bar to order. They do have staff that will go around and serve you at your table. They offered 14 beers the afternoon we visited. We enjoyed the Ancient Mariner, a lime Gose, Magilla Vanilla, a milk brown & Dancing in the Dark, a great hazy IPA. They do not have food on sight but we brought food in from Chipolte next door. The servers were friendly and helpful.

It appears the San Mateo location is also an open air beer garden. The Berkeley, Napa and Sacramento locations appear to have indoor and outdoor options. Nearby Fieldwork Monterey is Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa and Hotel Abrego.
