Background
From an initial annual output of just 800 barrels in 2005, Jamie and Sarah Bartholomaus have grown Foothills Brewing into a multimillion dollar regional brewery approaching 40,000 barrels a year in production. Opening a production brewery accomplished this. The co-owner is Matt Masten. There are two tasting rooms in Winstom-Salem. The downtown brewpub is at 638 West 4th Street and the main brewing facility with a 28-tap tasting room is at 3800 Kimwell Drive. The newest location, Footnote Coffee and Cocktails, is located next door to the downtown pub. It is part coffee roasterie and part hip urban cocktail lounge.
Experience
We went to the downtown facility in Winston-Salem located in the historic West End. Foothills Brewing is that classical brewpub that serves a variety of beer and a nice menu of very good food. We had an excellent smoked chicken sandwich on spent grain bread. The bar-keep was particularly friendly as were the patrons. From that aspect it was a nice place to have lunch and drinkable beer but didn’t find anything exceptional. Next door is a cute little vintage shop.
Foothills is very walkable from the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel (fabulous hotel!) and the Embassy Suites.
When in the area check out Hoots Beer Company and Small Batch Beer Company.
