Background
Richard Estenson opened The Fredericksburg Brewing Company in a restored 1890s building on Main Street in 1994. The brewery was opened within months of the passage of legislation allowing brewpub operation in the state of Texas. The oldest brewpub in Texas, The Fredericksburg Brewing Company, is a staple in downtown Fredericksburg. In addition to fresh ales and German-style lagers, you’ll find a full German menu in the restaurant.
A row of enormous tanks along one of the brewpub’s limestone walls includes copper brewhouse tanks, shiny stainless cooling tanks, and fermenters. Doors, floors, and the base of the long bar feature long-leaf pine recycled from the original building.
The food menu features beer-friendly items like soft pretzels, burgers, and pizza. If the bar fills up, head for the enclosed biergarten out back, or, since Fredericksburg laws allow it, take your beer with you on a stroll down Main Street. The Fredericksburg Brewing Company also offers 12 “bed and brew” rooms over the brewery.

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon after checking out Grape Creek Cellars winery (recommended) in the area. We parked along Main street with not much trouble. The brewery is quite accessible. We sat at the bar. We ordered up a flight of six beers. All were drinkable, none stood out. We did not eat although the menu looked interesting. We did note the large biergarten area off the main tasting room.
When your in Fredericksburg you may drop by Dripping Springs and check out Jester King Brewing, Acopone Brewing or Last Stand Brewing.
