Gravity Heights, San Diego, CA

Background

Gravity Heights is a 13,000-square-foot, multi-level indoor/outdoor brewpub and beer garden located in the heart of Sorrento Mesa. Gravity Heights was created in collaboration with Arturo Kassel, the founder of Whisknladle Hospitality and brewers Skip Virgilio and Ryan Trim. The idea behind Gravity Heights was to pair delicious food, exceptional service and genuine hospitality with some quality craft beer. Finally, Gravity Heights opened their doors in the fall of 2018.

Skip Virgilio is best known for founding Miramar’s AleSmith Brewing Company in 1995. Skip sold that brewery in 2002 but not before developing many award-winning recipes. After his departure skip watched the craft beer industry boom while working in real estate finance via his small business. He kept in touch with friends in the industry and continued to home brew. He struck a friendship with now business partner Ryan Trim—a member of homebrew club QUAFF and BJCP-certified beer judge—and, eventually, his neighbor Arturo Kassel, the founder of Whisknladle Hospitality. Over beers at Pizza Port in San Diego they decided on a new project, Gravity Heights.

Experience

We arrived on a Sunday late afternoon after a visit to California Wild Ale. We were looking for some good beer and food. Gravity Heights fit the bill with a very nice large indoor space, a spansive outdoor patio with fire pits and a covered wrap around bar.  We had a great booth just off the bar. We started out with some beer and our favorite beers were Guru, a nice Pale, and June Bloom an excellent hazy NEIPA. The menu is diverse and everything we tried was quite good. Crowler fills are available and we left with some June Bloom.

There is a Hyatt House San Diego/Sorrento Mesa right down the road. When in the area check out California Wild Ales and Green Flash.
