Green Flash Brewing, San Diego, CA

Mike and Lisa Hinkley established Green Flash Brewing in 2002. Brewmaster Erik Jensen has been with the label since 2012. In late 2014 the Hinkley’s purchased Alpine Brewing, some 30 miles east of San Diego. Alpine founder Pat McIlhenney will remain Alpine’s president and brewmaster, overseeing all of its operations. With increased production opportunity the once tough-to-find Alpine brand now may be found almost everywhere. The brewery opened their 2nd full-scale brewing operation and tasting room on the East Coast in Virginia Beach, VA in 2016. Less than one year later they announced they are expanding into the Midwest and opening a third location in Lincoln, NE. They have purchased a 10,000-square-foot production facility and tasting room with a restaurant in the Nebraska state capital. Since opening, Green Flash has become the 45th-largest craft brewery and its beers are available coast to coast.

We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and stood staring at the 19 beers available on tap. We wanted to try the offerings we can’t get locally. Green Flash is a huge facility with the brewery in plain sight of the inside tasting room. They also have a nice patio area with room for games and a pop up tent where food shows up. Two barrel aged selections were available, Divine Sauvage, a Belgium Tripel with a nice Brett red wine nose & Vivid Sauvage a Belgium style IPA, a bit boozy for me with a bit of barrel. Also loved the Hard Count IPA that had an excellent green hop nose and flavor.

It was Taco Tuesday and we enjoyed three super meaty and delicious tacos. No nearby lodging noted. Plenty of lodging with a $6.00 Uber ride.
