Background
Heist Brewing founder Kurt Hogan opened the doors in 2012 in a historic Highland Park Mill No. 3 building, once home to the largest textile mill in Charlotte. The story goes that the Heist name was inspired by notorious 1930s gangster Baby Face Nelson—a distant relative of Kurt Hogan. He has done a great job remodeling the old building that houses four dining spaces, a bar area, a mezzanine level, and an outdoor patio. Head brewer Eric Mitchell keeps a line of creative beer that always draws a crowd.
In 2019, a second facility, Heist Brewery & Barrel Arts, a 26,000-square-foot new brewery and taproom, opened in the North End part of town.
Experience
We arrived at Heist Brewing around lunch time and enjoyed a flight which included my favorites “Not from Concentrate V.6 IPA” and Thirst, another IPA. They have a great menu with diverse offerings; our lunch was delicious. Heist also offers a full bar and specialize on diverse whiskeys. We met Spencer Farrell, the general manager. He gave us some history and certainly shared his passion for Heist. This is a special place and should not be missed when visiting Charlotte.
There are no nearby hotels noted. Uber, my friends.
When in Charlotte also check out Legion Brewing, Wooden Robot and Birdsong Brewing.
