The nanobrewery, Kilowatt Brewing Company started out in an industrial setting in Kearny Mesa by co-owners Chris Calva, Rachel Fischer, and Steve Kozyk. Long time home brewer Chris Calva was brought in to do his magic and Steve Kozyk, who has many years of experience designing and installing lighting for Southern California bars and restaurants works his magic to provide a unique setting. Calva currently uses a German 10-gallon system.
We arrived on a late Tuesday afternoon and sat at the bar. The illumination of the tasting room was probably not as pronounced as it could have been since the back door was open and the process of beer making was in action. Still very cool hop cone shaped lighting over the illuminated bar. The beer selection offered up by brewmaster Chris Calva was quite unique compared to your standard brewery. We enjoyed the Passion Fruit Green Tea Infused Blonde Ale & the Gin Barrel Aged Imperial Wit. Also had to try a bottle of Wine Barrel Aged Imperial Sour. We’ll be interested in seeing what other unique brews Calva comes up with. He’ll be splitting his time between the Kearny Mesa & their new digs in Ocean Beach.
Also not present when we were there, Kilowatt does regularly have food trucks. No nearby lodging noted. Be sure to check out Council Brewing when in the area.
