Background
Phil Buchy and Newton Carver opened Legion Brewing in December 2015 in the former Brodt Music building. Brodt Music produced sheet music. Some good history here. Much of the interior has design elements repurposed from materials used in the factory. It is a cozy tavern beautifully decorated with wood and local artists creations. Adjoining the main tap room is a deck overlooking the brewing area which was the main production floor of the sheet music and still has the sign hanging on the wall.
In 2018, Legion Brewing Co. opened its second location in SouthPark. Its 8,500 SF on the first level of Lincoln Harris’ Capitol Towers office development will boast 20 taps, 4K SF in event space, an outdoor beer garden and an upscale menu.
Not resting on their laurels, Phil Buchy announced in 2019 a third location on West Morehead Street The brewery describes this new site as a “production facility and taproom,” opening in the fall of 2020. It will have the production area, taproom, courtyard, and biergarten, along with full food and beer menus.
Experience
We watched while Alexa Long the Head Brewer chopped up peaches and others crammed them into barrels of aging beer. Wish we could be around for the future tapping of this concoction! The bar tender was particularly friendly offering us samples of the wonderful beers on tap. Gose, fruit beers, Saisons and a fun Berliner Weisse aptly name Sparkle Party were some of our favorites. There was some food available, but we had already had lunch before arriving. We would definitely revisit Legion Brewing, good beer and good vibes.
