Background
Tyler Clark partnered with Eric & Rodessa Newton to open Libertine Brewing in Morro Bay 2012.
Tyler began learning about the beer industry working for a couple different distributors. He then moved back to the Central Coast to open his own brewery. The Libertine Pub on the Embarcadero in Morro Bay was one of the original “Craft Beer Bars” in SLO county, introducing the area to Double IPA’s, Barrel-Aged stouts and Belgian Sours.
In 2014, they began brewing Wild Ales using a traditional German steinbier technique by heating volcanic rocks in order to achieve the mash temperatures and boil. The beer is then allowed to cool in an open top vessel, called a koelschipp, overnight before making its way into American or French neutral oak.
Libertine Brewing opened a second site in San Luis Obispo in 2017 and then in 2018 expanded to Avila Beach.
Experience
We had Libertine on our list to visit when we were staying in beautiful Morro Bay for a few days. We visited the Libertine Pub on a Tuesday afternoon and it was sparsely populated. The brewpub appeared a bit worn with a bit of a fun dive bar vibe. We did find a table next to a window to enjoy the view of the bay.
We couldn’t have had a nicer beer tender. He helped us put together a flight of their offerings. We tried a variety of styles and found them to be good. We also chatted about what it was like to live around Morro Bay.
Libertine does offer a variety of food on their menu although we didn’t eat. I am also told they host live music certain nights of the week. The brewpub is accessible. Overall, we suggest a visit and would like to check out the other two locations.
When in the area you might try Three Stacks and a Rock Brewing , Pismo Beach Brewing and There Does Not Exist (Review coming soon) in San Luis Obispo.
