Experience

If the logo did not feature a menacing, ripped bull, the name would suggest a quiet senior-oriented diner. This is a full on restaurant/brewery, and the crowd was lively when it came time to sample. The rotation was somewhat standard going from a light wheat down to a dark, creamy stout, but there were some standouts. As a non-stout enthusiast, the XX Black Angus was smooth and rich and made me appreciate the benefits of well applied nitrogen carbonation. The Riley’s Red Ale – taking its name from the local military base – is quite a good red, not overly hopped and certainly well distinguished from a basic brown ale. The letdown was the raspberry wheat – the other beers were strong and distinct, and the brewery may have tried to take too light of touch with what turned out to be a lower taste ‘wimpy’ raspberry. However, this is a good choice in Manhattan for good beers, chow, and stories.
