We originally posted Fate Brewing Company in January 2015. Then they were forced to change to McFate. Finally in 2019 they were again able to use Fate Brewing.
Background
Steve McFate grew up in Scottsdale, AZ and was a home brewer for many years. He left his job as a mortgage lender in 2008 to pursue his dream of opening his own brewery. He spent several years learning about the craft beer industry. He attended Chicago’s Seibel Institute World Brewing Academy and got hands on experience in a craft brewery in Colorado. He returned to Scottsdale in 2012 to open Fate Brewing, which, at the time was the only craft brewery in the city.
The original location, now known as McFate Tap and Barrel is located at Shea and Scottsdale Roads. It was a labour of love, designed and built on a shoestring budget by Steve and his team. He hired Adam Schmeichel head brewer for the 7bbl brewing system. Fate quickly became a popular local tavern known for great varietal craft beer, wood fired pizza and a friendly, knowledgeable staff. Meanwhile, another Fate brewery, not associated with Mr McFate was opening in Boulder, Colorado. The breweries coexisted until a second location in Scottsdale was to be founded. It was at that time Steve rebranded his breweries, McFate.
The much larger location opened in 2015. Mcfate South is located on Scottsdale Road, south of McDowell Road in the southern most part of the city and close to the campus of Arizona State University. The larger facility is where all of the brewing takes place. They also can some of their popular IPAs and other favorites for take out. There is a huge outside patio adjoining the large full service bar and dining room. A more extensive food menu is available.
Experience
McFate Tap and Barrel continues to serve pizza along with several other options with their recently expanded menu. They serve most of the same beers offered at the southern location. The tap lists can vary a bit. Wine is also available.
It is our opinion, McFate brews some of the best beer in Arizona. Double Oatmeal IPA, Fatality IPA, Hatch Green Chili Gatos, Buena Vista Blonde and Candy Bar Milk Stout are just a few of the standouts. They are always coming up with something different and manage to put out some very good sour beer too, our fav being Single Hop Sour.
There is walkable lodging for McFate North at the Holiday Inn Express North Scottsdale at 7350 East Gold Dust Ave, Scottsdale, AZ. For McFate south, check out Magnuson Hotel Papago Inn on McDowell.
