Outer Banks Brewing, Kill Devil Hills, NC

Background

The Outer Banks Brewing began as a concept in 1992 while the founders, Eric Reece and Aubrey Davis were Peace Corps volunteers alongside Tina Mackenzie in Thailand. Aubrey had grown up spending summers at his grandparents’ place on the Outer Banks, and felt it was the perfect place to start a brew pub.

Eric and Aubrey had developed an interest in home brewing, and Eric worked at a brewery with Scott Meyer in Berkeley, California.

It took five years to win approval for the wind turbine. The Outer Banks Brewing Station is the first wind powered brewery in the United States. They were also the first business to produce wind power on the Outer Banks.

Experience

Outer Banks Brewing is large facility on the main drag of Kill Devil Hills.  We visited in the off season during the week and the place was packed.  A large yard in the back was filled with families enjoying food and drink while children played. Inside, we chose to squeeze in at the bar.  A signed photo of Guy Fieri was on the wall behind us.  He liked the place.  We had great food, the shrimp and grits plate was delicious and memorable.  The beer was varietal and decent.  While we viewed the place as more of a restaurant that brews beer, if you read the history on their website you get a different idea.

We grabbed a can of the Lemongrass Wheat to take home.  Outer Banks Brewing Company is definitely a fun place to visit.

When visiting Outer Banks, check out the oldest brewery on the outer Banks, Weeping Radish Farm Brewery in Grandy.
