In 2012, Chase Healey started Prairie Artisan Ales as a gypsy operation brewing out of Choc Beer Company in Krebs, OK. Farmhouse type ales were his interest and after hooking up with a distributor, his beers started showing up across the country. What no doubt helped his beer gain some interest was the creative artwork each bottle held thanks to his brother Colin. After some success , Chris and his brother decided Prairie needed a home of its own. They took to Kickstarter.com and asked for $10,000 to help fund a new brewery, and fans responded with more than double that amount. From what I can gather through my search, the Healy’s were about to open the new brewery in Tulsa (or maybe shortly prior to opening) when it was reported that the Healy’s had sold Prairie Artisan to Choc Beer Company. I cannot ascertain what involvement the Healy’s have in current operations. A second location in Oklahoma City is planned for summer 2017.
We rolled into Prairie in Tulsa early on a weekday evening. We had our choice for seating. The tasting room/restaurant is a bright, modern and quirky setting complete with a cool half circle bar. We had 20 different beer selections to choose from. Their food menu if fairly extension and thoughtful, with lots of interesting items to try from small plates to full meals. We enjoyed the Funky Gold Citra, a wonderful Sour ale; the Smoked Out, their smokey Gratzer, and the Light Speed Champion Farmhouse. Dinner was equally delicious.
This location is one of the rare opportunities to stay at a hotel wthin walking distance. The Fairfield is very close and is a nice hotel. The Zin is a bar between the hotel and prairie and a great place to stop by for a nightcap.
