Background
Preyer Brewing Company opened its doors in May 2015 and is family owned and operated. The 3,400 square foot brewery is connected to a 3,250 square foot taproom at 600 Battleground Ave. in downtown Greensboro in the former Steele & Vaughn building. A wall in the tasting room is adorned with political pictures of the U.S. representative and grandfather of the Preyer brothers. Calder Preyer got the idea to start a brewery after backpacking through the Czech Republic a decade ago. He began home brewing upon his return home. Soon he enrolled in Chicago’s Siebel Institute of Technology, which is home to the country’s oldest brewing technology program.
Experience
Preyer Brewing Company has a very comfortable tasting room with a long bar, several tables and a long sofa. There is a wall of windows separating them from a restaurant, Crafted Food, next door. When we visited Preyer, the restaurant was not open until 5pm. We snacked on cheese and crackers left over from our Fonta Flora visit . They do sell jerky and some snacks and have an open door policy on bringing in food.
Preyer has a program where they try various experimental hops in their brews. We were provided a sheet with detailed info on the hops used in the brews, something a real beer geek would enjoy. The HBC 344 Single Hop IPA, as well as the HBC 291 Dry hopped Saison were both very tasty. The Lewis & Krunk west coast IPA was great. GSO-zuh Gose Ale was noteworthy. Amazing for such a young establishment.
No nearby lodging noted, with the variety of breweries in the area, Uber anyone?
