Ragged Island Brewing, Portsmouth, RI

Background

Three couples opened Ragged Island Brewing, Matt and Katie Gray, Patrick and Liz Donovan, and John and Margo Almeida. Almeida has been retired for about twenty years, but had been busy sailing, building homes and home brewing. The other two couples after drinking his beer for years finally talked him into opening a brewery with them.

In March of 2017 Ragged Island Brewing Company opened their doors as a 1 bbl brewery before quickly upgrading to a 3.5 bbl system by July of 2017.

Five years later, they opened the doors of their new farm home at 54 Bristol Ferry Road in Portsmouth that comes with 37 acres of farmland and woods.

A new 10 barrel brewhouse was installed in the renovated barn. And they remodeled the 1890s farmhouse to house the taproom with multiple outdoor decks, a greenhouse, and stunning views of Narragansett Bay.

Experience

We arrived at Ragged Island Brewing on a Monday afternoon. The tasting room has several options for seating, high tops and low tops. There is also an adjacent greenhouse with some tables and comfy seating. In addition, they have a deck overlooking a huge outdoor area with Adirondack chairs and picnic tables.

We all tried several varieties of beers and found all to be very good. We suggest when you are in the area to check this unique place out and enjoy some good beer. The tasting room is accessible. The tasting room does offer canned Ragged Island beer to go as well as logoed apparel.

When in the area check out Narragansett Beer and Coddington Brewing Company.
