Saint Paul Brewing, St. Paul, MN
Saint Paul Brewing Background
In 2019, Flat Earth Brewing Company, which originally opened in 2007, rebranded as Saint Paul Brewing. In 2020 Rob Clapp, co-founder of Can Can Wonderland purchased Saint Pauling Brewing.
The brewery is located on the site of the original Hamm’s Brewery keg house, the city’s first brewery that opened in 1848, ten years before Minnesota became a state. The patio and biergarten was once the Hamm’s horse stables and carpentry shop. The limestone ruins that now frame the lush patio were created after a 2005 fire blew off the roof of the former carpentry shop and stables. The current taproom and brewery, unharmed in the fire, aptly reside within the original keg house building.
Can Can Wonderland co-founder Rob Clapp’s dream was to to transform the vacant buildings into an interactive art museum, entertainment center and more. Clapp owns four buildings on the campus, totaling 130,000 square feet. Recently the city purchased part of the campus with plans to turn it into affordable housing. Clapps concern is that the city’s plan would reduce the number of parking spaces from over 140 down to 70. Those spaces would be shared between the marketplace and St. Paul Brewing.
Experience
Walking into Saint Paul Brewing we thought immediately, this place is cool. Then we walked around the corner and thought it was even cooler, finally turning into the HUGE space with tables and comfy chairs with plants everywhere.
The ambiance is truly amazing, both indoors and outdoors. We tried a few of their hazy IPAs and found them delicious. We also loved their Nitro Stout. Although we did not eat, their pizzas looked great and they offered some unique styles.
This place is more of a self-service. You buy your drinks in at the counter and take it back with you to your table. And you order your food at your table through the QR code. They will deliver you your food to table once it’s ready.
The patio offers food service as well as beer and cocktails. The patio is also dog friendly. From the parking lot to their bar to their patio is all wheelchair accessible.
