Societe Brewing Company, San Diego, CA

Background

Societe Brewing Company opened their doors in May 2012. Co-founders Travis Smith & Douglas Constantiner had been involved in brewing for several years before meeting while working at the Bruery.

Co-founder and Head Brewer Travis Smith was the first production hire under Vinnie Cilurzo at the brewpub of Russian River Brewing Co. Within a year, he became a full-time brewer, brewing the likes of Blind Pig and the Plinys early in his craft-beer career. Smith then took the lead brewer position at The Bruery in Placentia, California, where he met Societe’s future CEO and Brewer, Doug Constantiner.

Experience

The Societe Brewing Company taproom is a large building with  a long bar and plenty of tables with all the brewing equipment right off the tasting room.  They had about a dozen beers on tap while we were there. They categorize their beer into one of four categories. We tried a sampling of each and found them to be quite good.  We also enjoyed a bottle of their “feral” group or barrel aged, The Urchin. There is no food in house but you can find food trucks most days of the week.

There is a Residence Inn & Ramada near Societe. When in the area check out Kilowatt Brewing and of course Modern Times Brewing.
