Background
In 2016, Sean DuBois and his wife, Molly Stevens DuBois introduced the community in Barre, Massachusetts, to Stone Cow Brewery.
The farm brewery is located in a historic 1830’s post and beam barn. The setting is a 1000 acre, fifth generation, working dairy farm set among the rolling hills of central Massachusetts. The couple and other members of Molly’s family run the farm. The family has grown the farm into the largest pasture-raised dairy farm in Massachusetts with 200 cows in their herd, 100 of which are milked.
About 10 years before Stone Cow Brewery opened, Sean and Molly got into the craft beer scene. After they discovered the veterinarian who works for them brewed beer one thing led to another. With the U.S. dairy milk industry seeing declining sales what do you do if you’re a dairy farmer who’s trying to maintain that way of life? If you’re Sean and Molly DuBois, you open a brewery.
DuBois believes they are the only working dairy farm that’s also a brewery. Dubois locally sources all of the breweries beer ingredients and grows his own hops. A wide variety of products sourced from the farm are available to visitors.
Experience
After camping around Otter River State Forest, we decided to check out Stone Cow Brewery. The grounds were very nice with a variety of seating options, indoor at the barn, patio over looking a meadow or in a tent and pavilion. There was a bluegrass band setting up. There is a BBQ shack on site with a smoker that was pretty good as well as an ice cream shack.
The beer was good quality but nothing blew us a way. The day we were there they offered a nice variety: Midnight “is” Where the Day Begins IPA, GRANITE KISS DIPA, Midnight NEIPA, Meadow Sweet Strawberry Sour, and It Gose Beyond Beauty to name a few.
