The Commons Brewery, Portland, OR

Background

The Commons Brewery

We were bummed to hear The Commons Brewery have closed their doors. The brewery has been taken over by San Diego based Modern Times.

The Commons Brewery owner Brewer Mike Wright started in his garage and on September 15, 2011 began brewing on their new 7 bbl system at their current location.  The tasting room opened December 3rd, 2011. Sean Burke, brewer, was hired and helps Mike create an ever changing variety of European inspired beers.

Experience

The Commons Brewery is located in the Belmont district of Southeast Portland. The area seemed like a fun place to explore. Our uber dropped us off in the rain so we headed right into the brewery. It is a huge warehouse space with lots of exposed brick, wood rafters and large windows to watch the rain fall.  It is one of those places where you head to the small bar, grab a beer and find a place to sit or stand.  Food orders can also be placed at the bar and they will deliver to your table.  A nice variety of creative craft beers on tap. There was an emphasis on saisons when we were there. Most of what we drank was pretty darn delicious. Urban Farmhouse saison is a year round offering along with the delicious tart Myrtle sour ale. The Tea Room saison was another standout.  Even the German Pilsner was above average and went particularly well with the most fabulous alpine cheese fondue from the onsite Cheese Annex!

It was hard to leave our comfy table and the good beer  and cheese boards, but we had to walk up the street to Cascade Brewing Barrel House!(leave the kids at home, no minors allowed at the commons)

No nearby lodging noted.
