Throne Brewing Company is the brain child of Carlos Toma. He caught the entrepreneurial spirit from his family that owned a convenience store for many years. He began working at the store at age 8. By the time he was 13, he knew how to do pretty much every task that needed to be done. In his late teens the store began focusing on carrying a wide variety of craft beer.
As the focus on craft beer grew, Toma got to know the business and some of the local brewers. One day while visiting one of the oldest craft breweries in Glendale, Dubina Brewing, the owners let him know they were looking to sell. One thing led to another and Toma officially acquired Dubina and all their equipment in October 2019 at the age of 23 and rebranded as Throne Brewing Company.
In April, Throne opened a second production facility and taproom in Peoria. The former craft beer retail shop owner then acquired and rebranded Freak’N Brewing in Peoria two months ago.
Experience
This brew pub is a bit out of the way when visiting the touristy areas of Phoenix metro. It is located on 67th Avenue, north of Bell Road in a strip mall. The interior is welcoming with booths, tables, and a large u-shaped bar all in view of the fermentation equipment. The Bell Rd IPA is a delicious west coast style IPA, their blood orange version is even better, both Dubina recipes. We were excited to hear that Brad Williams that co-founded Scottsdale Brewing joined the Throne team. Scottsdale Brewing closed during the pandemic.
They offered three different hazy IPAs the day we were there, a tasty, smartly named “The Lost Year” stout and a nice “Surface of the Sun” Kolsch. Actually every brew we tried was very quaffable. Yummy food is also available- brats, burgers, wings-standard brewpub offerings. Throne partnered with Schreiner’s Fine Sausage in Central Phoenix to develop a “special recipe” produced exclusively for the brewery.
No nearby lodging noted. When visiting Throne, we suggest you check out Richter Aleworks & Peoria Artisan Brewery.
