Mikkeller Brewing, San Diego, CA

Background

Mikkeller Brewing was founded by two home brewers: Mikkel Borg Bjergsø, a high school teacher, and journalist Kristian Klarup Keller. Put the names together, you get Mikkeller, founded in 2006. Keller parted ways with the company in 2007. Bjergsø, known as a gypsy brewer has grown Mikkeller worldwide and is involved in four locations in California.

Mikkeller Brewing’s first brewery in the U. S. opened in San Diego in April 2016. The San Diego location took over the facility and equipment used by AleSmith. Alesmith opened a much larger facility a few blocks away.

Experience

The tasting room is a fun place filled with the familiar Mikkeller styled artwork. There were 20 different beers the afternoon we were there. I particularly enjoyed the Hver Anden Uge #1, a juicy IPA with a smooth light melon flavor. Also loved the Berliner Weisse. We think Mikkeller is a must visit when in San Diego. Mikkeller is right between Pure Brewing Project & White Labs Brewing in the Miramar area. There are several other breweries in the Miramar area. It might make sense to stay in the area.

Mikkeller does not serve food but Thursday through Sunday they have food trucks available. No nearby lodging noted but plenty of hotels within a short Uber ride.
