September 2013, the Schilling Beer Co. opened its doors. The company began with the friendship between Jeff Cozzens and John Lenzini (head brewer) who were buddies from high school in Michigan and both attended University of Indiana. Lenzini began home brewing in college and with his degrees in chemistry and German, got into translating old German beer recipes. His love of old school European styles focused the direction Schilling Beer Company would follow. The company announced in October 2016 a major expansion of the brewery. The brewery expects to complete the multimillion dollar project in 2018.
We arrived on a weekday afternoon and there were a few others in the tasting room. The brewery is housed in a historic building on the north bank of the Ammonoosuc River. This beautiful setting makes for a great patio experience when weather permits (unlike the day we were there). We ordered a flight and particularly enjoyed the Double-Dry Hopped Belgo Galaxy Pale, Mare Nectaris a smooth sour ale, Poppy’s Moonship a tart Gose and Karl, a smoky Ale. What more could you ask for! For food they offer rustic wood-fired pizza and local meats and cheeses. There are also a couple historic inn’s nearby, Thayer’s Inn & The Beal House.
