Background
Counterpart Brewing was founded by Joe Sartor and Greg Gnys. The two Niagara Region natives met when they were working in Vancouver. Living in the Vancouver area is where Gnys developed his passion for craft beer, and had thoughts of opening his own brewery. Being in the food industry since he was a teenager, Sartor always dreamed about opening his own restaurant. The two soon began putting together the plans of a joint project.
Greg and Joe were encouraged by family members to move back to the Niagara area in 2017 and they opened the doors to Counterpart Brewing in March 2019. The two purposely set up the brewery away from the tourist area as they wanted to establish a community meeting spot through great craft beer and food . But, we found them anyway, haha!
Experience
We rolled into Counterpoint Brewing on an early Friday afternoon to join maybe 10 locals. Its a comfortable space with a nice patio area. We sat at a high-top inside and ordered two flights to try 8 of their offerings.
All the beers we tried were great. We enjoyed a couple of hazy IPAs, pilsners, sours and a dark lager. We also ordered the delicious mussels and a pretzel. The food menu was a step above your standard pub food and had a variety of delicious sounding items. Service was friendly and efficient.
The facility is quite accessible. Plenty of hotels in the vicinity, we stayed at one of the Marriott’s overlooking the falls.
If you are heading west into Grand Rapids try Point Brewing Company. If you are heading east to Syracuse check out Buried Acorn Brewing and Bullfinch Brewing!
