Buried Acorn Brewing, Syracuse, NY

Background

Buried Acorn Brewing Co. opened their doors in July 2018, becoming the ninth brewery to open in Syracuse, NY. Co-owner and brewer Tim Shore along with co-owner Sam Kim worked on opening the new brewery for more than two years. The brewery is located on Van Rensselaer St. in Syracuse’s Inner Harbor. The Inner Harbor brewery has a capacity of about 50.

Buried Acorn specializes in Barrel-Aged Sour and Farmhouse Beer, which was the draw for us. Shore spent over a decade studying the world of mixed-fermentation Wild Ales through both industry experience and years of home brewing.

In November 2021, Stone Bend Farm in Newfield, in collaboration with Buried Acorn Brewing, opened a craft beer tap room. Buried Acorn FLX is the newest addition to the 4,200-square-foot geothermal greenhouse Stone Bend has become known for. Tim Shore of Buried Acorn and Terry Bloom of Stone Bend Farm met on the punk rock show circuit in Syracuse and their band toured around the country for some time.

In 2022, Shore opened a new Buried Acorn Taproom on the ground floor of the historic Sylvester Building, with an entryway at the corner of Fayette and Irving in Syracuse. The new taproom features Buried Acorn beers, with a kitchen run by Shore’s wife Crystal, a trained chef. The new taproom has seating for about 175.

Experience

We arrived at the Van Rensselaer St. location on a Thursday afternoon to join a few others in the tasting room. After grabbing seats at the bar we were helped by a very friendly beer tender as we perused through their extensive list of beers. We settled on three different sour offerings and Wholphin Loves Narluga, their New England IPA. All were delicious and we left with several cans.

We highly suggest a visit to Buried Acorn when in the area. We would love to try the other two locations. The Van Rensselaer St. location is accessible and there is an Embassy Suites and A Loft not far away.

Although we did not eat, the menu looks good with a variety of wraps, sandwiches and flatbreads. The tasting room also has beers to go. When in Syracuse, you can also check out Bullfinch Brewpub. If you are headed to Saratoga Springs, we suggest you check out Druthers Brewing. If you are headed to Niagara Falls we suggest Counterpart Brewing!
