Background = Greenpoint Beer & Ale
OK, its close to NYC, in Brooklyn. Ed Raven has named his latest endeavor, which opened in 2014, for a 17th-century Scandinavian shipbuilder “Dirck the Norseman.” Dirck had acquired 300 acres of what is now Greenpoint and Bushwick. Chris Prout, head brewer, is the creator of the diverse and interesting selection of ales with a definite influence to english, german and belgium styles. The brewery is installed behind visible glass, in a sprawling former plastic-bag factory near the East River waterfront. Greenpoint offers a restaurant, with seating at a huge bar and tables, both communal and more intimate. In September 2016,Greenpoint released its first cans, Smash Street Extra Pale Ale and the aptly named Instant Credibility Double IPA.
Experience
We found ourselves in Brooklyn one Saturday to partake in the Smorgasburg food festival. After enjoying a variety savory and sweet food items, we went on the search for craft beer. The line into Brooklyn brewery was ridiculous and we had already tried many of their beers so time to move on. It was just a short walk to Greenpoint Beer and Ale Company. The place is a large space in an intersting black brick building topped by a cool geometrically patterned tower. Colorful picnic tables lined the sidewalk in front and garage style doors opened up into the brewpub. There is a large bar for seating along with tables for two and community tables to accommodate many a beer drinker. It housed a comfy ambiance of wood, metal and artsy light fixtures. Families were having as much fun as the hipsters and bros. It is definitely a neighborhood hangout. Eating, drinking and game playing. We were there in the late afternoon. We sampled a nice variety of interesting beer including a saison, pilsner, grisette and gruit!
