Mountains Walking Brewery, Bozeman, MT

Background

Owners Gustav Dose and Sarah MacDonald opened Mountains Walking Brewery in 2017. Gustav first got the idea of opening a brewery when he lived in Taipei Taiwan. His dream of opening a brewery led him to studying at the Siebel Institute. He spent time at the Institute’s Chicago and Montreal campuses, the latter offering Gustav an opportunity to contemplate the art of matching food to drink brought to Montreal.

Gustav’s plan is to produce a variety of beer styles. He has created a, Belgian-inspired Koelschip room: a copper brewing vat surrounded by cedar walls which are completely open and exposed to the Bozeman air. This allows him to naturally ferment using wild yeasts in the air. In addition, he moved into the world of rice based brewing as well as Sake.

Experience

We dropped into Mountains Walking Brewery one afternoon and grabbed a couple spots at the bar. Looking over the beer menu we were amazed at the variety. From hazy IPAs to pilsners/lagers, to Sours to Hard Seltzers to Sake. We loved the IPAs but also tried some rice based beers also produced by Dose under the name New Hokkaido. The Sake bomber we ordered was delicious.

The staff was friendly and attentive. The environment is inviting and offers fabulous views of the Bridger Mountains. The menu looked varied and delicious but it was too early for us to eat. There are canned beers to go along with some merch.

When in Bozeman check out MAP Brewing. There are many hotels to choose from just south along Highway 191. Lots of new breweries in Bozeman! We suggest a visit!
