Standing Stone Brewing, Ashland, OR

Background

Standing Stone Brewing had its beginnings in 1996 when the Amarotico brothers took ownership of the building.  The brew pub in The Whittle Garage Building, which was built in 1925 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The brothers spent half a million dollars renovating the building. Standing Stone has 10 owners, among them Alex and Danielle Amarotico.

Standing Stone leases a 265-acre pasture of land about a mile away from the brewery and raises cows, chickens, lambs and bees. The farm also allows the brewery and restaurant to compost all of their food waste. Utilizing a rotational, multi-species grazing system, they try to best benefit the land and animals, as well as bring spent grain and vegetable matter in as supplemental feed. In return, they get fresh and quality meat, eggs and honey for their customers.

In 2015, Alex and Danielle Amarotico opened a larger brew pub in downtown Medford, Common Block Brewing Company. It is also in a historic building.

Experience

Standing Stone Brewing is housed in a historic garage, and was a welcome site after several hours in the car.  The brewing equipment is located on a mezzanine above the dining area. The brew pub has a lot of room inside and a patio as well.  I believe they had seven beer options this day.  We opted for the Freestone Sour, a Berliner Weiss tart with a peach overtone and their Twin Plunge double IPA, a bit of nose and flavorful.  Great variety of food options, we enjoyed the Chinook Salmon.  They do embrace the farm to table concept.

Did not spend a lot of time in the area, but did note a Best Western, Bard’s Inn, within walking distance of the pub.
