Westbrook Brewing, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina

Background

The Westbrook Brewing reputation precedes it – especially when it comes to their gose, which was a staple of the scene when gose was not a popular style. In fact, this reviewer’s first beer trade in Boston was executed to obtain just one can of Westbrook gose.

Westbrook was founded in 2010 by couple Edward and Morgan Westbrook. Edward had honed his homebrewing skills in graduate school. By the time he graduated graduate school he was spending much more time on brewing than on the curriculum – to great benefit for us all.

Experience

The Westbrook location in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, won’t win any design awards. The office-complex space feels corporate, and is a large non-descript space, redeemed somewhat by a large patio area. But the benefit of this type of location is space for parking and people.

The beers, however, are wonderful. The gose remains a stellar staple. We additionally enjoyed the light “Beer to Drink When Its Hot Outside” and a Banana Shake IPA which was a soft, fun IPA with a stimulating nose. Bartenders were nice, and we enjoyed the outdoor seating in South Carolina’s mild October (2021) weather. Westbrook offers a small selection of snacks including chips and cheese. There are occasionally food trucks and outside food is welcome. Check their calendar before you go to see what the food situation will be. Dogs are allowed on the patio, and the overall vibe was relaxed and welcoming.

There are no convenient lodgings or public transit noted – you’ll need to drive here. The somewhat remote location among low-density office space would make me nervous about relying on ride sharing here. In fact, during our visit one unfortunate patron was trying to get an Uber almost our entire time there.
